The Story
The Elks Building opened August 30, 1911 as a lodge meetinghouse; its theater followed in 1912 and began showing films in 1920, wired for "talkies" by 1929. United Artists closed it December 31, 1989, and in 1990 burst frozen pipes badly damaged the vacant building. Local owners Doug and Lori Andrews restored and reopened it May 15, 1992; a 2012 lobby renovation stripped 1970s drop ceilings to reveal the original curved 1929 plaster "barrel" ceiling.
