The Story
Flintstones Bedrock City opened in 1966 as a 62-acre Flintstones-themed park and campground. Guests entered past a 20-foot Dino statue and rode a miniature train through "Dinosaur Canyon," past the volcano "Mt. St. Wilma," and around "Mount Rockmore" — a parody of nearby Mount Rushmore carved with the faces of Fred, Barney, Dino, and "Mr. Granitebilt." The South Dakota park closed in 2015; by around 2019 its Flintstones theming was removed and the property rebranded as Buffalo Ridge Campground Resort.
Surprising Facts
→ It featured "Mount Rockmore," a parody of Rushmore carved with cartoon faces.
→ A sister park in Valle, Arizona (1972) is still operating even though the South Dakota original is not.
→ The park closed in 2015, but its theming wasn't fully removed until around 2019.
