The Story
Mount Moriah opened as Deadwood's hillside cemetery in the late 1870s; Hickok was reinterred here and a sandstone statue was raised in 1891 by his friend Charlie Utter. Calamity Jane was buried beside him in 1903 — reportedly her dying wish, though local lore credits a tourism-minded prank. Seth Bullock's grave sits on a separate promontory, deliberately facing Mount Roosevelt, named for his friend Theodore Roosevelt. The cemetery holds distinct Chinese and Jewish sections reflecting Deadwood's gold-rush diversity.
