The Story
For 31 years, Santorini anchored a prominent corner at Halsted and Adams in the heart of Greektown. While neighboring restaurants focused on lamb and moussaka, Santorini built its reputation on fresh seafood prepared in authentic Greek style - making it a slightly more upscale option than its Halsted Street neighbors.
The restaurant was known for extensive fish preparations, a menu that went beyond the standard Greek fare, and an environment that felt a bit classier than the competition. For Chicagoans seeking fresh fish with a Greek accent, Santorini was the destination.
The pandemic hit Greektown hard, and by fall 2020, Santorini closed its doors. Owner George Reveliotis described the closing as 'abrupt.' The building was demolished in late 2021-early 2022, leaving an empty lot where generations had celebrated. A mixed-use development with luxury rental units is planned for the site.
