The Story
When Macoupin County built their new courthouse in 1870, the $1.34 million price tag was so astronomical that it became known as the 'Million Dollar Courthouse.' The county didn't pay off the debt until 1910 - 40 years later.
Route 66 travelers passing through Carlinville could marvel at the limestone palace that nearly bankrupted a county. The building features elaborate ironwork, a central dome, and the only remaining example in Illinois of a 'hollow square' courthouse design.
