The Story
The official starting point of Route 66 has shifted over the years due to route realignments. The original 1926 route began at Jackson Boulevard and Michigan Avenue, but today the 'Begin Route 66' sign stands at Adams Street and Michigan Avenue, overlooking Grant Park and Lake Michigan.
This has become the ceremonial 'Mile 0' for modern travelers, and the most photographed sign on the entire route.
Surprise Facts
→ The original terminus was at Jackson Blvd, not Adams Street
→ Route 66 was officially decommissioned in 1985, but the sign remains
