The Story
The first of Savannah's 22 squares, laid out by James Oglethorpe in 1733 as the centerpiece of his revolutionary city plan. Named for Robert Johnson, colonial governor of South Carolina who aided the Georgia colony. The Nathanael Greene monument (1829) honors the Revolutionary War general buried beneath it.
