The Story
Bronze statue by Felix de Weldon (sculptor of the Iwo Jima Memorial) honoring Florence Martus, who greeted every ship entering and leaving Savannah harbor for 44 years (1887-1931) by waving a cloth by day and a lantern by night. Her devotion has never been fully explained — legend says she was waiting for a sailor who never returned.
