The story
The Stanley Theatre opened as a deluxe movie palace on February 27, 1928. It cost $3 million, was designed by the Philadelphia firm Hoffman-Henon, and seated 3,800. It was Pittsburgh's main first-run house for Warner Bros. pictures. The DiCesare-Engler company bought it in 1977 and booked rock concerts there through 1984. Bob Marley played his last live concert at the Stanley in 1980.
A restoration ended on September 25, 1987, when the building was renamed the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. It now seats about 2,885.
