The story
On February 11, 2012, Whitney Houston was found submerged in the bathtub of Suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton. She was 48. Her longtime mentor Clive Davis was hosting his annual pre-Grammy gala in the hotel's ballroom below.
The coroner ruled her death an accidental drowning, with cocaine use and heart disease as contributing factors. Whitney had struggled publicly with addiction for years, her voice and marriage to Bobby Brown both deteriorating in public view.
The gala continued that night - at Davis's request, reportedly, because "Whitney would have wanted it." Jennifer Hudson performed an emotional tribute at the Grammys the next day.
What's There Now
The Beverly Hilton continues to host the pre-Grammy gala and Golden Globe Awards. Suite 434 remains a regular hotel room. Whitney's daughter Bobbi Kristina died in eerily similar circumstances three years later, found unresponsive in a bathtub at age 22.
