The story

In the hysteria of 1692, Salem executed 19 people for witchcraft and pressed one man to death with stones. Judge Jonathan Corwin was one of the magistrates who signed death warrants from this very house, the only structure in Salem with direct ties to the witch trials.

Corwin conducted preliminary examinations here, where the accused were questioned and often condemned. Bridget Bishop, the first person executed, was examined in these rooms. So were Rebecca Nurse, George Burroughs, and others who went to Gallows Hill.

The house has been moved and restored, but the original beams and structure remain. Staff report cold spots, objects moving, and the feeling of being watched - especially in the rooms where accusations were heard.

A museum open for tours. Salem's witch tourism industry brings 1 million visitors annually, peaking in October. The Witch House is the most photographed building in town.
