The story
The Georgian Terrace opened on October 2, 1911. Architect William Lee Stoddart designed it in a Beaux-Arts style meant to evoke Paris. Its guests included Clark Gable, Tallulah Bankhead, Calvin Coolidge, John J. Pershing, Walt Disney and F. Scott Fitzgerald. When the Fox Theatre opened across the street in 1929, traffic was stopped so performers could walk a red carpet between the two.
In 1986 the hotel was listed on the National Register as part of the Fox Theatre District, which blocked plans to demolish it. It was converted into luxury apartments in 1991 with a new 19-story wing, and after the apartments were vacated in 1997 it reopened as a hotel.
