The story
One of the oldest Black Baptist congregations in North America, founded in 1788 by Andrew Bryan, a formerly enslaved preacher who was whipped and jailed for his ministry. The current Romanesque Revival building dates to 1873. Bryan's persistence helped establish the right of enslaved people to worship.
