The story
Savannah's grandest antebellum hotel, occupying an entire block of Johnson Square from 1838 to 1902. Hosted presidents and generals including Sherman. The original burned in 1856 and was rebuilt even grander. Its demolition in 1902 is one of Savannah's greatest architectural losses. A modern bank building now occupies the site.
