The story
Savannah's first public hospital and almshouse, established in the early 19th century to care for the city's indigent, sick, and orphaned. The institution evolved into Candler Hospital — the second-oldest continuously operating hospital in the United States. The original poorhouse building is incorporated into the hospital campus.
