The story
The story starts in 1967, when a Saks Fifth Avenue opened on Big Beaver Road. The single-level, upscale Somerset Mall was built around it in 1969, designed by Louis G. Redstone Associates, with tenants like FAO Schwarz and Mark Cross. A 1991-1992 overhaul added a second level and a Neiman Marcus, and rebranded the place as the Somerset Collection.
The revamp worked well enough that in 1996 the owners built an entirely new three-story mall -- Somerset North -- directly across Big Beaver Road, bringing in Michigan's first Nordstrom and a Hudson's. To connect the two, they spanned the road with the climate-controlled "SkyWalk," an enclosed skybridge with moving walkways that was among the first of its kind in the country. When Marshall Field's became Macy's in 2006, Somerset briefly stood as one of only three malls in the U.S. to host all four major department-store nameplates.
What's There Now
Still operating as an upscale two-building mall connected by the SkyWalk, anchored by Nordstrom and Macy's (North) and Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue (South).

Somerset is two malls -- one on each side of Big Beaver Road -- stitched together by a 700-foot enclosed bridge with moving walkways so shoppers never have to step outside.
