The story

Guido Pfister and his son, Charles F. Pfister, opened the hotel in 1893 at a cost of over $1 million. Architect Henry C. Koch designed it in Romanesque Revival style. Fireproofing, electricity and thermostat controls were uncommon features then. It has what is described as the largest hotel collection of Victorian art in the world.

Hospitality magnate Ben Marcus bought it in 1962 and added a 23-story tower behind it without altering the original building. The Pfister also has a reputation among visiting baseball teams. Some MLB players say they've had paranormal experiences here, and some Los Angeles Dodgers stay elsewhere instead of with the rest of the team.
