The story
The Huckins stood at the southeast corner of Main and Broadway. Retro Metro OKC traces the site to the 150-room Lee Hotel, built in 1900 by Oscar G. Lee. Joseph Huckins bought it in 1906, and a 1908 fire damaged it. The Oklahoma Historical Society dates the Huckins Hotel to 1909, while Retro Metro says it was reborn in 1910, so the year is a little fuzzy.
Its garage annex, redesigned and opened in the early 1930s, connected directly to the hotel. Guests could drive in, check in, and go straight to their rooms, a pitch aimed at auto courts and early motels. The seven-story structure held about 200 cars. The hotel and annex were demolished in 1971, with The Oklahoman reporting it on July 12 of that year. I.M. Pei's original plan had called for keeping the Huckins.
