The story
Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss built Forbes Field to replace Exposition Park, and the first game was played on June 30, 1909. The Cubs won it 3-2. It was made of concrete and steel, a first in the National League, and Pirates records put the cost at $1 million for land and construction.
Bill Mazeroski hit the first home run to end a World Series here in 1960. The Pirates closed the 62-year-old park in 1970 with a 4-1 win over the Cubs, and the site was cleared for the University of Pittsburgh.
