The Story
Built in 1915 by Eastern European immigrant coal miners, Holy Dormition Orthodox Church stands as a reminder that Route 66 passed through diverse communities. The miners pooled their resources to build this ornate church, featuring Byzantine-influenced architecture and traditional Orthodox iconography.
The church represents the immigrant experience along Route 66 and the coal mining heritage of southern Illinois. These were the workers who dug the coal that powered America's industrial revolution - and they built this beautiful church as a piece of home in a new land.
