The Story
Built in 1903, the J.H. Hawes Grain Elevator is the only fully restored wooden grain elevator on all of Route 66. The structure represents the agricultural economy that Route 66 served as it crossed Illinois farm country.
Saved from demolition in 2001, the elevator was painstakingly restored and is now open for tours, offering visitors a chance to see the inner workings of early 20th-century grain storage.
