The story

The Arkansas reached San Francisco Bay on December 20, 1849, after a nearly six-month voyage, and ran aground on the rocks around Alcatraz. An entrepreneur named Joe Anthony opened a saloon inside her called the Old Ship Alehouse. Yerba Buena Cove was gradually filled in around it.

Warren P. Herman bought the hotel and bar in the early 1890s. Wikipedia's account says both he and later owner Henry Klee used the saloon to shanghai patrons. Klee rebuilt the building in 1907 in the form it has today, and current owner Bill Duffy acquired it in 1992.
