The story

After the failed European revolutions of 1848, German refugees brought the Turner movement to America, and a Turner society was organized in Milwaukee in 1853. Architect Henry C. Koch designed its hall, completed in 1882 with an addition in 1899. The society's leaders included Socialist Congressman Victor Berger.

The stained glass windows carry slogans from the Turners' progressive politics. The hall was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996, and its ballroom, now a concert venue, was named Venue of the Year at the 2010 Wisconsin Area Music Industry awards.
