The story
Brothers Morris and Hyman Iceland started the deli in 1888. When Willy Katz arrived in 1903, the name became Iceland & Katz, and in 1910 Willy's cousin Benny joined him and bought out the Iceland brothers. Subway construction later forced the deli to move to its current side of the street.
During World War II, the family habit of sending food to sons in the service became the slogan "Send A Salami To Your Boy In The Army." Customers still get a numbered paper ticket at the door. The table from the "When Harry Met Sally" scene carries a sign: "Where Harry met Sally... hope you have what she had!"
