The story

This five-story, twelve-unit building at 288 Grand Street was constructed in 1910, during the peak era of tenement construction on the Lower East Side. It is a representative example of the old-law tenement style typical of the neighborhood—built to maximize occupancy in a dense urban area. The building has operated continuously as residential housing since its completion. Like many buildings along Grand Street in this era, it would have housed successive waves of immigrant families—German Jews, Italian immigrants, and later Chinese and Puerto Rican residents—working in the neighborhood's factories, shops, and small businesses. The building remains in residential use today, currently owned and operated as a rental apartment building.

Everything that was here

Did you know?

Old-law tenements like 288 Grand were built before modern housing codes; they typically maximized interior space with minimal light wells or air shafts, reflecting the era's prioritization of density over amenity.
The building is located in the Lower East Side, one of the most densely populated immigrant neighborhoods in late-19th and early-20th century America.
The building's construction predates New York City's 1901 Tenement House Law, which introduced significant reforms to tenement design standards.
