The story
The corner of Cass and Highland was a hardware store remodel in 1937, then Table Supply Food Stores by 1947, which had merged with Kwik Check Grocery by 1956. In December 1957 the Palladium Ballroom opened in the building, with a New Year's Eve party featuring the Fabulous Skyliners. A wholesale record store on the corner, Budisco, moved out as the ballroom moved in.
The Palladium hosted music, boxing and large dances, and the business later moved to 40th Street and East Broadway. The building was demolished in 1965, the same year Curtis Hixon Hall opened and construction began on the John F. Germany Library. The lot then sat empty for decades before AER in the District began development on it. Highland Street, which later became Macinnes Place, has been closed and folded into that development.
What's There Now
The lot has been redeveloped as part of the AER in the District project.
