The story
Sapphire Supper Club opened on April 1, 1994, at 54 North Orange Avenue, in the building that later became The Social. Orlando Weekly noted that most of the internet dates the name change to 2002, though the writer could not confirm it.
The room hosted local acts including Terri Binion, Steve Foxbury, Brian Chodorcoff, Eugene Snowden and Jeff Nolan, and Georgia bands Donkey and Drivin' n' Cryin'. A 1995 Orlando Sentinel review by Scott Joseph called the club difficult to recommend. In April 2014 a 20th anniversary gathering for the club's opening was held at The Social, with performances by Thomas and Olivia Wynn and others. The Social now operates in partnership with the Beacham Theatre next door.
