Gino's East

162 E. Superior St., Chicago, IL

Three cab drivers who "didn't know pizza from nothing" opened Gino's East in 1966; the deep-dish recipe came from Alice Mae Redmond, a cook they hired away from Pizzeria Uno.

The story

Sam Levine, Fred Bartoli and George Loverde opened at 162 E. Superior Street off the Magnificent Mile in 1966. When customers started carving initials into the tables in the 1970s, management handed out markers and pointed at the walls, starting the graffiti tradition unique to the original location. Redmond cooked here for 29 years until 1989. The restaurant left Superior Street in 2000; Gino's East now has ten locations and its own brewery.
