The Story
This 4-mile segment between Lexington and Towanda is one of the best-preserved sections of original Route 66 in Illinois. The narrow two-lane concrete road was bypassed in the 1940s and left largely untouched.
In 2002, local preservationists installed a series of Burma Shave-style signs along the route, recreating the nostalgic experience of driving Route 66 in its heyday. The signs feature clever rhymes just like the original shaving cream ads.
