The story
On September 7, 1996, the Petersen Automotive Museum hosted a party after the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon fight in Las Vegas. Tupac Shakur attended with Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight.
Around 11:15 PM, Tupac left the museum in Knight's BMW 750iL. At the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, a white Cadillac pulled alongside them and opened fire. Tupac was hit four times - twice in the chest, once in the arm, once in the thigh. He died six days later at University Medical Center. He was 25.
The case has never been officially solved, though LAPD arrested Duane "Keffe D" Davis in September 2023, nearly 27 years later. The shooting reignited the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry and likely contributed to Notorious B.I.G.'s murder six months later.
What's There Now
The Petersen Automotive Museum still operates at this location, now with a striking red ribbon facade. The actual shooting occurred in Las Vegas, but this was Tupac's last public appearance.
