The story

The Canter family opened a delicatessen in Jersey City in 1924, and opened a shop in Boyle Heights in 1931. A location at 439 North Fairfax Avenue opened in 1948, and in 1953 the deli moved down the block into the former Esquire Theater, which had shown Yiddish-language films. It is open 24 hours most days, closing for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The Kibitz Room cocktail lounge opened in 1961 and has stayed a favorite of rock musicians. It is credited with launching the Wallflowers and Fiona Apple. Co-owner Marc Canter, a high school friend of Slash, published a book in 2007 about the early days of Guns N' Roses.
