The story

On March 9, 1997, Christopher "Biggie" Wallace left a Soul Train Music Awards after-party at the Petersen Automotive Museum. His SUV stopped at a red light on Wilshire Boulevard at the intersection with Fairfax Avenue.

A dark Chevrolet Impala SS pulled alongside. The driver, dressed in a suit and bow tie, fired a 9mm blue-steel pistol into Biggie's passenger door. Four bullets hit him - the fatal one pierced his hip and struck his colon, liver, heart, and left lung. He was 24.

Like Tupac's murder six months earlier, Biggie's case was never solved. The LAPD has theorized it was retaliation for Tupac, possibly involving Death Row Records. The killer's identity remains one of hip-hop's great mysteries.

The intersection looks like any other in LA. No memorial marks the spot. Biggie's influence on hip-hop, however, remains visible everywhere - his flow and storytelling changed the genre permanently.
