The story
Founded by imperial concession on 14 May 1881 by Anna and Stanisław Potocki, after mineral springs were located on the estate in the summer of 1876. The waters are an iron-alkaline brine carrying bromine, iodine and lithium, certified by the Galician Physicians' Society on 25 June 1878. Three springs — Tytus, Celestyna and Klaudia — were captured and named for the founders' parents. The resort grew fast: eight residences and eleven bath cabins by 1882, thirty-eight private boarding houses and 2,514 annual visitors by 1905. Fires in the early 1910s destroyed much of the western spa district, and new mineral baths were not completed until 1926, with mud baths added from 1932. Roughly 5,000 guests a year were visiting by the end of the interwar period. The Second World War devastated the resort, and it was rebuilt afterwards largely as a children's sanatorium. It operates as a working spa today, and the pump room still dispenses water from the original springs.
