The story
In 1987, the Daczewitz family purchased the Mister Donut location. When Dunkin' Donuts acquired the Mister Donut chain and offered existing locations the option to convert to Dunkin' Donuts franchises, the Daczewitz family chose to remain independent. In the mid-1990s, they held a naming contest that was won by a student from William Fremd High School, who came up with the name "Spunky Dunkers."
The family-owned shop is currently co-owned by sisters Jan Daczewitz, Sherree Daczewitz, and Suzette Campbell. Spunky Dunkers maintains the vintage charm and layout from the original Mister Donut era, including the classic donut shop setup with racks and counter service. They make donuts fresh twice daily on the premises from scratch, offering both classic varieties (honey-glazed, cinnamon, old-fashioned, jelly-filled, long johns) and creative seasonal specialties (apple crisp, pumpkin, red velvet, German chocolate, chocolate cream puffs). The shop is famous for its chocolate icing donuts and also serves a variety of coffee drinks, including nitro brew. It operates 24/7 and has become a beloved community institution in downtown Palatine.
