The story

Chartered under Magdeburg law in 1376 by Duke Władysław Opolczyk, regent in Ruthenia for King Louis I of Hungary, with the grant going to a locator named Mikołaj Reyman. Styled Ladisslaulia at first, the town was recorded as Rymanów by 1415, taking its name from Reyman. It sat where the Subcarpathian and Hungarian trade routes crossed. The medieval layout is still legible — a rectangular market square with streets leaving from the corners, the Catholic church south of it, the Jewish quarter and synagogue northwest from the 16th century. Władysław Jagiełło visited in 1409 and granted two annual markets, and further fair and staple privileges followed through the 15th and 16th centuries. Fires in 1839 and 1903 and the First World War repeatedly destroyed the square's buildings, including the arcaded wooden houses on the south side.
