The story

Founded in 1958 on Biała Góra above the San, this is Poland's largest open-air ethnographic museum by quantity of objects — 38 hectares, well over a hundred relocated wooden structures from the 17th to 20th centuries, about 30,000 catalogued items and roughly 3,800 m² of indoor exhibition space. Its creation was urgent for political reasons: post-war border changes and the forced deportations of 1945–47 emptied the surrounding valleys of their Boyko, Lemko and Dolinian inhabitants, leaving houses, churches and workshops to rot or be dismantled. The collection is arranged in four ethnographic sectors — Boyko, Lemko, Pogórzanie and Dolinianie — plus an industrial sector on the region's oil heritage, linking it to Bóbrka to the west. In September 2011 it opened Galicyjski Rynek, a reconstructed 19th-century Galician market square with a working inn, pharmacy, post office and workshops. About 25 km east of Rymanów.
